Our Top 5 Favourite Places to Stand Up Paddle on the River Hamble<\/h2>

Curbridge Creek<\/h3>

Right at the top of the River Hamble, you'll find a small creek that winds its way through a canopy of tall trees towards Curdridge. The water is glassy calm in this neck of the woods and we always feel like intrepid explorers as we paddle through the mangroves and muddy banks. The waft of chips and beer tickles our nostrils, enticing us ever closer to the Horse and Jockey Pub<\/a> where we tie our paddleboards to the little wooden jetty. Sipping on ice-cold beers, we usually take some time to relax in the riverside beer garden and devour a bowl of salty chips to energise us for the paddle back. Beware of the tides here, though, as the river does dry out. Leave yourself enough time to head back up the creek towards the main river before being left high and dry.\u00a0<\/p>

Lower Swanwick<\/h3>

One of our favourite places to access the River Hamble is from Lower Swanwick. Parking is available in the small car park on Swanwick Shore Road, but it can get very busy during the summer, especially at weekends, so we try to get there early morning to beat the crowds! With the sun just starting to appear over the horizon, the soft, golden rays glisten on the surface of the water, and we push our boards off the stony beach. The water is usually calm and sheltered, but we keep our wits about us as we dodge powerboats and sailing yachts accessing Swanwick Marina. A right-hand turn takes us underneath the roaring M27 motorway before we emerge into a peaceful stretch of water fringed with large oak trees. The warmth of the sun breaks through the cold of dawn and we have the place to ourselves. Time to paddle further upstream and immerse ourselves in this tranquil waterway.\u00a0<\/p>

Hamble Village<\/h3>

When paddleboarding from Hamble Village itself, we tend to start out from the public slipway just next to the Royal Southern Yacht Club. As we paddle away from the beach, a curious family of swans glides by in hope of a rogue bread crumb or two. Then, once we\u2019re past the marina, we cross the main channel of the river, making our way towards the shallows, away from the marine traffic on the Warsash side. Heading north we pass endless rows of sailboats bobbing on their moorings and tenders whizzing out to their motherships in the middle of the river. Paddling against the tide, we dig deep to make headway through the water and snake around the meandering river bed towards Mercury Marina and then onto Universal Marina. Tired and worn out, we usually stop for a much-needed rest in the deserted inlets of Benam Creek. Drifting past the quirky houseboats, we enjoy a cheeky sundowner as the sun dips behind a curtain of large tree, and cruise south again with the flow of the tide gently pushing us back to the village.\u00a0<\/p>

River Hamble Country Park<\/h3>

For direct access to the peaceful oasis of the north of the river, we launch from the pontoon at River Hamble Country Park<\/a>. Carrying our boards through the cool shade of the woods, the dense foliage eventually clears and the sun peeps through to reveal faded wooden slats stretching out over the gently rippling water. Set on a wide bend of the river, there is plenty of room to paddle and explore as we set off along the meandering river banks. The sun feels warm on our backs and the spray from our paddle punching the surface of the water is refreshingly cool. The further we paddle up the river, the more we feel disconnected from the hectic humdrum of the busy river to the south and we really enjoy escaping to this natural beauty spot that we are so lucky to have right on our doorstep.\u00a0<\/p>
