With the rapid growth of SUP and lots of newbies grabbing their boards, taking to the water and entering the world of stand up paddleboarding at the moment, one of the big questions being asked is \u2018what should I wear paddleboarding?\u2019 So, we thought we\u2019d give you a little insight into what we\u2019ll be wearing when we head out on our SUP boards in the UK this summer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Swimwear<\/h3>

If it\u2019s sizzling hot outside, we'll grab a pair of boardshorts, a swimming costume or a bikini to paddle in! When the weather is good, it\u2019s time to embrace the sunshine and stay cool as a cucumber as we paddle. We always make sure to lather up with a high factor sunscreen and take some spare clothes just in case it gets a bit chilly out there.\u00a0\"\"<\/p>

Wetsuit<\/h3>

When the water temperature is low, we'll wear a summer wetsuit. This is mainly to protect us if we fall into the water and keeps us warm after a surprise dip! We'll also don a wetsuit when paddleboard surfing - we'll be swimming a lot, so a layer of neoprene will keep us comfortable both in and out of the water.\u00a0<\/p>

Shorts and T-Shirt<\/h3>

If it's too hot for a wetsuit but too cold for swimwear, we'll paddle in a pair of lightweight boardies and a t-shirt<\/a> or a rash vest. Quick-drying fabrics are best to avoid staying soggy if we happen to fall into the water and breathable wicking fabrics will help keep us cool when we're paddling hard and working up a bit of a sweat.\u00a0<\/p>

Sunhat<\/h3>

If it's sunny, we'll grab a good sun hat to shade our face and keep a cool head while stand up paddle boarding. If we're going for a very relaxed paddle, a wide-brimmed hat provides the best protection, but for a bit of extra visibility, a sports cap is our favoured choice for more energetic SUP adventures.\u00a0\"\"<\/p>

Windproof smock or jacket<\/h3>

A windproof and\/or waterproof outer layer such as a jacket or smock will keep the wind chill at bay and protect us from any light rain showers. Even if we set off in minimal clothing, we'll usually take a jacket in case the heavens open while we're out on the water or the wind strength increases.\u00a0<\/p>

Sunscreen<\/h3>

Whatever kit we decide to wear paddleboarding, we always make sure we wear a high factor sunscreen or sunblock to protect any areas of skin that aren't covered. The sun's UV rays are more intense when out on the water - not only are they hitting you from above, but they are also bouncing off the surface of the water and hitting you from below, so extra care is required.\u00a0<\/p>

Sunglasses<\/h3>

When on the water, the sun reflects off the surface of the water, so it's much brighter and more intense than when ashore. We wear polarised lenses that are specifically designed to counteract the glare and protect our eyes. You might also want to choose a pair of sunglasses that float in case they fall off your head, or you knock them off with your paddle.<\/p>

Footwear<\/h3>

Most of the time we SUP barefoot, but neoprene shoes or booties can offer extra warmth when it's a bit cold. They can also provide additional protection from underwater debris should we fall off our boards and are a blessing if we have to walk across a stony beach to get to the water's edge - ouch!<\/p>

Leash<\/h3>

One of the most important things we always make sure to wear is a leash around our ankle that attaches us to the SUP board. This means that we won't loose the board or become marooned in the water alone. We use a short coiled leash when leisure paddling and a longer leash when stand up paddle board surfing.<\/p>

Buoyancy Aid \/ PFD<\/h3>

If you're new to paddleboarding, a weak swimmer or simply want to stay extra safe while on the water, you may also choose to wear a personal buoyancy aid. Alternatively, a waist belt personal floatation device is an excellent way to keep safe without the bulk of a lifejacket - simply pull a toggle to deploy if you need it.\u00a0<\/p>

Other items to take paddle boarding<\/h2>

Change of clothing<\/h3>

If we're out on the water for a long time and are paddling a fair distance away from our base, we'll take some spare clothing with us. This might include extra layers in case the weather turns bad or perhaps a full outfit in case we fall in the water and want the option to change into some dry clothes.\u00a0<\/p>

Drinks \/ snacks<\/h3>

Staying hydrated while you're out on your SUP is really important, especially in the summer. We fill up reusable bottles with water to take onboard and sip regularly. We'll also take some tasty high energy snacks if we're paddling a long way.<\/p>

Drybag<\/h3>

We pack all of our extra kit into a good quality dry bag to make sure nothing gets wet. The bags we use are big enough to hold all of our kit and can be clipped to the board or the bungee, so we don't lose it over the side.\u00a0<\/p>

What to wear after paddle boarding<\/h2>
